"BALACLAVA - LOST WORLD" AND "INKERMAN - FORTRESS AND MONASTERY"
Excursion along embankment, Genoa fortress Chembalo, Temple of 12 Apostles, unique plant on repair of submarines (gallery). Kalamita fortress, cave monastery of St. Clement.
Balaclava is a small town on the Black sea coast. It is a household name, indeed! Streets, boulevards and underground stations in England, France and Turkey, settlements in Australia and Republique de Maurice are named in honour of Balaclava.
Balaclava bay is the unique creation of nature. Narrow 1, 5 km stretch comes into land, being separated from sea by narrow entrance. Entering the bay the rocky shore makes several turns. That is why the harbour itself is invisible from the open sea. Countless poetic compositions and glow praises have been dedicated to this magic place for three thousand years.
Apart from unique monuments of nature, the ruins of legendary Genoa fortress Chembalo and ancient temples have been preserved here. But what really astonishes you is the system of powerful underground constructions with enormous number of labyrinths and 600-metre canal for passing of nuclear submarines.
Do visit the marvelous Southern town Balaclava. Once you have been to this town, you will never forget it!
On arrival to Inkerman you can climb the road coinciding with ancient way, hewn in the rock, which leads to majestic ruins of Kalamita fortress. It was a sea fortress of medieval principality Feodoro. The remnants of towers and walls and more than 300 man-made caves can still be seen there.
Coming down to the rock foot, you can see the territory of restored Inkerman monastery of St. Clement. The monastery was named in honour of St. Clement, who, according to the legend, kept here the first church and a spring. When Empress Katherine II came to the Crimea, she was met in Inkerman. During World War II the monastery was used as a headquarters.
Having visited these places, you will realize the invisible link of ?poques and eternal value of human labour. And the brightest example to it is the fortress-monastery with double name Kalamita - Inkerman.
